We’ve grown used to living in fragments.
Our attention is constantly pulled in every direction—scrolling through endless feeds, checking notifications, jumping from task to task. It’s no wonder our nervous systems often feel overwhelmed.
In the midst of all this noise, it’s easy to forget the quiet joy of reading a book. Not to be productive. Not to check another goal off your list. But to simply immerse yourself in something deeper than the shallow current of daily life.
Much like mindfulness and EFT tapping, reading can offer a grounding experience—a return to stillness. If you’ve been longing to bring books back into your life—without pressure or guilt—here’s how to ease into it gently.
1. Start Ridiculously Small
When it comes to building a habit, starting small is key. Most people think they need to power through a book a week to call themselves “a reader.” That’s the quickest way to burn out.
Instead, start with the tiniest possible step: read for two minutes.
Not two chapters. Not 20 pages. Just two minutes.
This approach removes all resistance. Once you start, you’ll often keep going. And even if you don’t, two minutes is enough to feel the quiet shift that reading brings—similar to the subtle calm that follows even the briefest EFT tapping session.
2. Redesign Your Space for Reading
Your environment shapes your habits. We tend to gravitate toward whatever is easiest to access. If your phone is always within reach, it will win your attention every time.
To make reading more effortless:
- Leave books in plain sight. Keep them on your desk, your nightstand, or your coffee table. Make them as easy to access as your phone.
- Create a reading spot. A cozy chair by the window, a floor cushion, or a favorite café. No need to overthink it—just a space where reading feels inviting.
- Disconnect while you read. Turn off your phone and let yourself be unreachable for a while. Notice how the urge to check fades when you truly give yourself to the moment.
In mindfulness practices, we often talk about creating “pockets of stillness.” Let this be one of them.
3. Read What Pulls You In
Forget about the books you think you should read. No one is handing out medals for finishing dense, soul-crushing tomes.
Instead, follow your curiosity. Read what feels light, what excites you, what makes you want to turn the page:
- A novel that sweeps you away
- A memoir that feels like a long conversation with an old friend
- A book on an obscure topic that sparks a hidden fascination
There’s no wrong choice. Trust your intuition here, just as you would when tapping into what your body and emotions are telling you during EFT practice.
4. Audiobooks Count Too
Reading doesn’t have to mean holding a physical book. Audiobooks can be a beautiful way to reconnect with stories and ideas—while walking, cooking, or driving.
Let go of the idea that listening isn’t “real” reading. What matters is the experience, not the format. Think of it as another way to stay present and engaged, even in the flow of daily life.
5. Don’t Turn It Into a Productivity Hack
It’s tempting to track every book, set ambitious reading goals, and turn this into another improvement project. But that often sucks the life out of the habit.
Reading doesn’t need to be optimized. It just needs to be part of your life—like a slow conversation that unfolds over time.
Move through books at your own pace. Drop them if they don’t resonate. Pick them back up months later. Trust that you’ll read exactly what you need, when you need it.
6. Reconnect with the Pleasure of the Page
Reading can be a refuge from the constant pull of everything else—not an escape, but a return. A return to yourself, your curiosity, and something deeper.
Much like mindfulness and tapping, reading is a practice of presence. It’s about creating space for connection—to yourself and to something more expansive than the surface level of everyday life.
You don’t need a complicated strategy to read more. You just need a book and a few minutes.
Start small. Let it be imperfect. Watch it quietly become a part of your life again.
Just like EFT tapping and mindfulness, the power lies in the small, consistent steps. Trust the process. And most importantly—enjoy the journey.
Do you have a book that feels like a refuge? One that grounds you, sparks curiosity, or offers comfort? Share it in the comments—you might inspire someone else’s next mindful read.
